North &
South Burlesons Together?

Hailing all Burlesons!!! The Northern branch and the Southern branch of the Burleson family may finally have come together... Daniel McCance has shown new information linking Aaron Burleson I to Edward Burleson's son, John... he claims they are the same man! The databases will be buzzing with the new JOHN AARON BURLESON.. check it out at:
Burleson Family Genealogy Forum

Comments would be much appreciated...

Thanks,

I finally did it! My fingers are sore.. but I finally typed in all that info on Thomas Burleson of Mitchell Co, NC..! It's all names and dates... the kind of stuff we live for!

Thomas Burleson of Mitchell Co, NC!
Family information is available on link above... He is buried in the Burleson family cemetery in the Hawk community (see Cane Creek map... purple dot)...!!! Thomas was born circa 1750... he is buried supposedly with three of his sons in the same cemetery... news comes from
Toe River Valley Heritage Book in North Carolina... It is said that all descendants of Mitchell, Avery and Yancey counties are from Thomas Burleson...Seven pages of the Toe River Valley Heritage Book contain genealogical information on this branch (this information has been typed in my database and is available for viewing on a text file... you may access it by clicking on the link above...) Other surnames mentioned: SPARKS, YOUNG, GREENE, GOUGE, GAGE, BUCHANAN, McKINNEY and more...

A portion of the section on Aaron Burleson:

"NC Historians maintain that Aaron was killed by Indians on Cane Creek while he was with Daniel Boone.
Tenn. historians say that he was killed by Indians at Clinch River while on his way to meet Boone. The Clinch River is not too far from where his home was. It has been told that his son, John, was wounded at the same time. It is not known if his body was buried.
Rachael Burleson, after the death of her husband, deeded their land to Azariah Doty. The land is still in the Doty family in
Green County (TN). She took eight of her children back to N.C. They suffered terrible deprivation with the Tories on one side and Indians on the other. Two of the little boys, who had many narrow escapes standing lookout watch for Indians, went three years without shoes and with only buckskin clothing."

BURLESONS IN AMERICA SINCE 1677!

Edward Burleson,
supposed brother of Aaron Burleson I (and now the suggested father of said Aaron... or John Aaron) has been researched and well laid-out in a text document sent to the webpage author
... (if you asked me, though.... he's too old to be his brother!)

Aaron Burleson came to America
to find his brother, Sir Edward Burleson...

STOP!

There may be something wrong with this information... An Edward Burleson was found in Suffield, CT in 1677! He died in 1698! No immigration records have ever been shown for Aaron Burleson... REVISION OF WHAT WE HAVE ACCEPTED MAY BE NECESSARY...

CHECK OUT EDWARD'S FAMILY!

Since that time, his whereabouts in America have been sketchy, at best. What follows is a brief outline and some elaboration on his reputed whereabouts as they have been gleaned from other sources... these include mostly heresay...

It is my intention to find all relevant data regarding Aaron Burleson I and his family in order to "stabilize" the fluctuating information regarding this legendary family...

1726 - migrated to Baltimore, Maryland from Wales in search of brother Sir Edward Burleson (later of CT). SUSPECT INFO.
1748 - Lunenburg Co, VA Tax list "mouth of Falling River southward..."
1749-1760 for eleven years... no record (where is he?) (known to have left VA by 1754)
1761 & 1762 - buys land in
Cumberland Co, NC; once next to Able Lee (1762)
1763 - dies (don't know source for this date)

Aaron Burleson I came to VA before 1747... court records for 8 July 1746 show in "A State of the County Levy" that Charles Talbot (a year old), received 140 lbs. tobacco from his assignee... named Aaron Burleson. (Lunenburg County Court Order Book I, p. 138)

Aaron had moved here since arriving in America in 1726 and after some time (possibly) in New Jersey (Orange Co, NY or Essex Co, NJ which border one another), probably working the land for some few years before actually receiving title to it on 15 Dec 1749. The original grant states in Book 29, p.35 that he received 147 acres located on both sides of the south fork of the Little Otter River in Lunenburg Co, VA... in the tax district of John Phelps. Aaron and Jonathon (his son) both show in the 1748 Tax List for this district. The
Otter River land is now in present-day Bedford Co, VA. Aaron left the present-day Bedford Co. area before 1754 (from Bedford Co. Deed - sold land bought from Aaron (no date given for that sale))... for where?

The following year, in 1749, a John Burleson appears in Mathew Talbot's District of Lunenburg County in what is now part of Charlotte Co, VA. After 1749, no Burlesons appear in
Lunenburg County... ANY part of it! The question is... Where did they go?

11 years later, in North Carolina:

Aaron shows up in 1761 buying land in Cumberland Co, NC on "Rich land" creek (now in Moore Co, NC), assuming that this is the same Aaron Burleson and not his son, Aaron Burleson II... It may be that Aaron Burleson I died up in VA and his son is the one we find in NC from then on... (need documentation to prove this theory) (need record showing 1763 as date of Aaron's death).

Suppose Aaron Burleson I had never made it out of
Maryland! Then his sons, Aaron II being oldest and Jonathan and John decide to go to VA... Aaron Burleson II was born 28 May 1712 and would have been 34 years old in 1746... plenty old enough to own and work land... his brother John would be 17 years old in 1746 (born 1729) and may not have appeared on tithe lists, working instead for his brother (or father) Aaron until 1749 when he was about 20 years old and received his own land to work... in Talbot's Dist.

Question: If Aaron Burleson I WAS still alive in 1748, why is it that only one Aaron Burleson shows up on the Tithe List in Phelps Dist... in all of Lunenburg, for that matter? Jonathan is there... where's his brother, Aaron... the one that's older than him? It seems likely that Aaron Burleson I did not live long in
America and that many of the supposed sons and daughters attributed to him may actually be grandsons and granddaughters.

All suggestions and comments upon these hypotheses are very welcome and encouraged... if you can prove it! Please send me all proven data with sources... what we're all after is the absolute truth if the legend is to remain intact. Want any proof that ol' Aaron knew Daniel Boone... would love that, wouldn't we? (By the way, Davy Crockett was born about the same time and in the same place that the Burlesons were living in the NC-TN mountains! Just for thought...)

Below is a map to help facilitate our study... this map demonstrates the NC and TN appearances of Aaron Burleson and his family. It also shows the major routes of settlers taken in the late 18th century as well as county boundaries at that time. Notice also that present-day counties are shown to help researchers know where to look for pertinent records...

Thomas is apparently taking care of his younger siblings after Aaron's
death in 1782... John (23), James(15) and ? (Aaron III supposedly
d.1785) It may also be that while in north TN, close to VA and KY lines,
some of the family decided to head for KY (where some were found)
It is believed that Jonathan (brother of Aaron II) went there. There were
supposed to be two others... brothers or sons or nephews...
Who is the 4th male in Thomas' house? A son? How many were sons?
Jno. is Aaron II's son... and so is Jo. (Joseph?)...

Executors my friend William Lusk and my wife Delila. Witnesses W. Lusk and Jesse Barnes.

Will of Delila Burlison Bk 3, p.45:

29 May 1850 Will of DELILA BURLISON. First, I give my spirit to God who gave it, and my body to be decently "entured in the toom." I give my daughter Volly Chastain all I possess and the $100.00 that I am to have of John M. Randolph provided he should gain a suit at law for some black servants that belong to my father's estate in the Court of Chancery in McMinnville. I appoint Volly Chastain and John M. Randolph as executors of this will. Winesses James Collier and John Cardwell. Proved 7 Oct 1850.

Probate Records of Edward Hogan:

From
TENNESSEE TIDBITS VOL.3, p.174-5:

HOGAN, Edward
Died in 1827 leaving a will, as shown
29 September 1852 in the suit of Polly Randolph & others vs Marcus Hogan & others. He devised to his wife, Elizabeth (Hendricks), all of his estate. He left 13 children. Elizabeth died in 1848. In 1850 the defendant purchased the interest of Anthony under a Decree obtained by the Creditors of said Anthony. Anthony had purchased six of the shares of the heirs and the purchase of Polly Randolph was illegal and void and they are entitled to six thirteenths. All of the 13 heirs are living or as to they their personal representatives. John Randolph has sold his share. Marcus Hogan is entitled to one share. Peter Looney was mentioned as one of the parties to the suit, also Ed Hogan. (War TN, Ch Ct Min, 1/379) On 26 March 1860 in the suit of Polly Randolph & others vs Marcus Hogan & others, it was stated that Marcus Hogan has never called for his share, nor has Richard Hogan or his heirs, nor Jane Cox heirs. There is also money due to the Heirs of Haris Mauldin, Mrs. Polly Randolph heirs, Mrs. Rebecca McFadden, Heirs of Robert Hogan, Heirs of Christian Sanders. Each of the above named are entitled to 1/10 except the Heirs of Haris Mauldin are entitled to 6/10. Said money has been in the custody of the Court for the term of seven years and uncalled for by the parties. The money is to be paid to the heirs of Harris Mauldin 6/10 of the whole amount, and being the shares of Delila Burlison, Andred C. Hogan, Squire E. Hogan, James Hogan, Granville H. Hogan & Anthony Hogan, and he pay to Polly Randolph or her children one tenth of the same, to Rebecca McFaddin one tenth thereof, to Robert Hogan or his heirs one tenth of the same, and to the heirs of Christian Sanders the one tenth of said fund. (Ibid 3/176)

It looks more and more like Moses is a son of Aaron Burleson III and Volley Hogan... b.c1785 (prob. before since Delila was b. c1785)... In the right place, right time... INPUT ANYBODY?

The information about Simeon Burleson being the son of Thomas is pure conjecture on my part... he was simply in the right place at the right time...it was not part of the Avery Heritage info...
Census data was collected by myself and was not part of the Avery Heritage info....

Other notes: this book states that Aaron Burleson II probably died at the head of Cane Creek in (then) Mitchell Co, NC (that explains better why it was called the First Massacre of Mitchell Co, NC...!) Some say it was that he died on
Clinch River on his way to see friend Daniel Boone... well .. The simplest explanation is usually the best one... I'd rather think that Aaron III died at Clinch River and that Aaron II died where his family was.. in Mitchell Co.. (he was resident of Sullivan at the time, but at least his son Thomas' family was still in Mitchell Co. - just over the mountains from Sullivan)
