Mary Burleson's (m. William Brooks II ) father David lived in Anson Co., NC since at least by 1800, according to Montgomery Co, NC census records.  In 1780, he received a grant of land there. Later, c1806, he would move, with most of his family to a farm in Rutherford Co, TN.  Although David dies in Murfreesboro, TN many of his descendants are found in Leon County, Texas .  His father was John Burleson, son of John Aaron Burleson of Connecticutt.

David F. Burleson (Rev War Soldier), b. 1752 Bedford Co, VA, d. 13 Aug 1832 Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co, TN.

While in Montgomery Co, NC, in 1800, he was found living next to our William Brooks I and his son, John Brooks (later of Henry Co, TN).  He is also flanked by his oldest son, Moses Burleson.  This is an interesting time for all these people.  It was a time of impermanence, or transition that William sat firmly in the middle of.  William Brooks’ homestead and family were planted firmly in the fertile soil of the banks of the Rocky River.  But, his neighbors were coming and going.  We have no evidence of David’s father, John Burleson in the area at this time.  However, his grandfather Aaron Burleson was here briefly that we know of, thanks to a Brooks deed south of Rocky River (near Burnesville area):

24 Jan 1763 - JOHN BROOKS of Anson, to JOHN CULPEPPER of same, for L10 NC money... land on S. side Rocky R., beginning at a branch, near the ford, between JOHN BROOKES & JOHN LEE... Richardson's Creek... JOHN BROOKS (B) (seal), Wit:  HENRY STOKES, AARON BURLISON, W. BROOKS

Aaron reputedly dies in 1763 so, I think that this may have prompted the family, who may have settled here, to move further on.  Some of the Burleson men stay behind, however.  Isaac Burleson and his family remain in Montgomery Co, NC and his descendants live there still.  This Isaac seems to be David’s brother.  He is there on the 1800 Montgomery Co, NC census as well.

All in all, David Burleson and Ursula Weatherford move to Rutherdford Co, TN by 1816.  We figure 1816 because of the Montgomery Co, NC Petition he signed in Sept. of that year and because of this deed of sale for a slave to our William Brooks (likely William Brooks II, his son-in-law):

Notice that the deed is made out for “North Carolina, Montgomery County”, scratched out and replaced with “Tennessee, Rutherford County”.  This deed is dated 10 Aug 1814.  By the time it was probated, David and his family had left.  David Burleson bought land in Rutherford Co, TN in 1806 and appears on the 1820 census for Rutherford Co, TN.

Incidentally, David Burleson makes “his mark” which is rather distinctive.  So, who wrote out the deed?  Well, we know that William Brooks II can write and we have samples of his writing, which seems to match the writing in this deed quite well!

Below you will find David F. Burleson’s tombstone.  Below that is what is remaining of his home in TN.  Priscilla Clarke, thank you so much for sending them!

And this is the old cedar log house that David homesteaded in first.  It has been dismantled and reassembled in a safer location nearby, now.  http://bfa4.homestead.com/BFA.html

David's wife was Ursula Weatherford.  She lived with her father, Wilkerson and grandfather, William in the Clear Creek area of Old Mecklenburg Co, NC.  This is probably where the Weatherfords had jumped off the Great Wagon Road from Lunenburg, VA.  Wilkerson Weatherford, likely named for his mother’s (Susannah Wilkerson, poss. Daughter of John Wilkerson) was a first cousin, once removed (shared the same great-grandfather, William Weatherford of Fallen Creek, Henrico Co, VA) of the famous "Red Eagle," Creek Indian leader who led the attack on Ft. Mims, killing 497 white settlers and soldiers. William "Billy" Weatherford was also known as Hoponika Futsahia or "truth teller." In 1814, he surrendered himself to Andrew Jackson, pleading for leniency towards the starving remnants of his people. Jackson spared his life and released him to live a quiet life in southern Alabama. A mural depicting this surrender can be found in the rotunda of the Alabama State Capitol. He was the son of Charles Weatherford and Sehoy MacPherson (Sehoy III of the Creek Nation) and was 3/4 scotch and 1/4 creek indian.

Ursula Weatherford b. 1758 Lunenburg Co, VA, d. 27 Feb 1835 Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co, TN

Ursula Weatherford's family had come down the Great Wagon Road from Lunenburg Co, NC where her grandfather, William Weatherford is found in Lunenburg Co. Tax Lists in 1764, 1 of 4 poles (one of which is our Wilkerson). William was baptized at St. Peter's Parish and is on record in the Vestry Book pg. 404, 406.

Contrary to popular opinion, it appears that the Weatherford family was of Scotch origin.  Only Charles Weatherford had any “relations” with Creek Indians, giving rise to the infamous “Red Eagle”.  And he was reputed to be only ¼ Indian at that.  So, our branch of Weatherfords is more likely white.

Ursula was the third child of six known for Wilkerson Weatherford.  Her siblings were:

Agnes (b. c1745 m. John Joseph Vann, ___ Burleson),

Hilkiah "Hill" Weatherford (b. c1750, remained in Montgomery Co, NC at least until 1800),

William (b. 1759, also in Montgomery Co, NC for 1800 but later found in Spartanburg Co, SC for 1820 and 1830),
