Edmond Brooks

of Ramer, Montgomery Co, AL

Edmond Brooks was born between probably around 1770, either in Virginia or North Carolina.  He was the son of John Brooks II of Montgomery Co, NC and brother of John Brooks who moved to KY prior to 1800 and then on to OH by 1804.  After selling the land his father left him in 1798, he made plans to move to Horry District of South Carolina.  (BCBNOTE: There is the possibility that a "Bibby" or "Bebby" Brooks found in 1800 Montgomery Co, NC census might be Edmond.  However, this name "Bibby" appears in Charlotte Co, VA in 1810 and then winds up in Madison Co, TN by 1830.  The dates match very well for all occurrences and I don't believe this is our Edmond… therefore, I also believe that Edmond was not as old as we previously thought nor does he have as many children as previously believed.)  Edmond had married his first wife in Montgomery Co, NC.  Sometime prior to 1800, Edmond's first wife had passed away, probably in Montgomery Co, NC.  He and his son (probably only one… see note above) moved to Horry District, SC where he met Rebecca Sellers, daughter of Benjamin Sellers of Brunswick Co, NC and granddaughter of Benjamin Sellers from Edgecombe Co, NC.

Edmond and Rebecca were married by her father 17 July 1806.  1810 Horry Dist, SC census had Edmond Brooks and his youngest son, Luke was born there in 1809.

Rebecca Sellers was born c1781, maybe in Brunswick Co, NC where her father was from, although census records say “SC.”  For a time, Benjamin Sellers had traveled across the Carolina state line to the old Georgetown District (later in 1801, Horry Co, NC) where he is found on the 1790 census.  Later, in 1800 he is still there with his son, Jordan Sellers.  According to his will, however, he is back in Brunswick Co, NC by Oct 1817.

Only known Montgomery Co, NC record of Edmond Brooks:

p. 319 - 21 Nov. 1798 - Emond Brooks to Charles Coppage - $1200. - no acreage given - "all that tract of land which my father John Brooks, Senr., Dec'd willed to myself and my brother John Brooks." - Also a tract on Coppins (Cooper's?) Creek joining said land and John Richardson. (NOTE:  what happened to John Brooks, Jr. here?  Emond is selling all the land that he's supposed to own with his brother, John...)

This map shows Cooper's creek and part of the lands belonging to John Brooks

Edmond and his family were living in Horry District, SC, where they remained until after 1830, when they moved to Pike Co., AL

In 1840 Edmond and Rebecca Brooks were living in Pike Co., near their son, Luke Brooks, a farmer and Methodist Protestant minister.  Many of Rebecca Sellers Brooks’ family moved with them (Descendants of Matthew Sellers) to Pike Co, AL.  The town of “Sellers” near Ramer was likely named for them.

Edmond died 14 Aug 1844 in Pike Co (later, Montgomery), AL.  On 3 Mar 1855, Rebecca filed a Bounty Land Grant in Montgomery Co, AL stating most of the information as to her marriage and parentage.   Rebecca died in Montgomery Co, AL on 13 Sep 1856.  A tombstone marks her grave in the town cemetery of Ramer, attesting to being the “wife of Edmond Brooks”.

AL SOLDIERS IN THE REVOLUTION, WAR OF 1812 & INDIAN WARS, Vol. III by Grandrud, p. 58: Pension for SARAH GRAHAM, 5 May 1879, Conecuh Co., AL - states that she "was united in marriage to EVAN BROOKS in Horry Dist., SC by BENJAMIN SELLERS, Episcopal Methodist Minister of the Gospel at the House of JOSEPH GRAHAM, her father, sometime on to wit the 15th day of Sept. 1815 or 1816 and that EDMON BROOKS, Mr. FALK, JACOB SELLERS, son of REV. MR. SELLERS, other persons (sic) not remember & her father's family were all present.....".

Both Luke and Evan filed for War of 1812 pensions in Conecuh Co, AL after moving there.

I have been reading your notes & family trees. How have you determined the children of Edmond Brooks? Do you have deeds, estate or Bible records?

I am trying to find info on Evans/Ivins/Evant Brooks b. abt 1836 married Martha A. Celia English. He died in the Civil War in 1862. William Calvin Brooks had a son, Evans about the right age, but that one married Charlotte & went to TX. Evans & Martha were living next door to him in 1860 Conecuh Co. AL. In 1850 Coffee Co. AL, Ivins & Sarah Graham Brooks had a son Ivins. They lived next door to Issac Odom's family. After Evans died and Isaac Odom's wife died Martha married Isaac.

I found "Rebecca Brooks Wife of Edmond Brooks died Sept 13, 1856 Aged 75 years",in Ramer Cemetery, south Montgomery Co. AL. Her grandson Andrew Jackson Brooks and some of his family are there, too.
