Ezekiel Marion Brooks of
Ezekiel Marion Brooks was born
It is likely that Jane Byrd was the
granddaughter of Andrew Byrd who is found in the 1850 Stanly Co, NC census
listing not far from Jane and her family (mother Margaret M. Byrd, age 36,
brother Jonathan M. Byrd, age 10 and
little brother Andrew, age 7). Jane, herself was listed
as "Catherine," age 13. 1840
census comparison suggest that Robert Byrd may have been her father. Margaret M. Teeter Byrd later married Wiley
H. Hatley and gave Jane several half-siblings, one of
whom was Doctor Wiley Hatley who married Martha Ellender Brooks, dau. of "Rabbit John" Brooks.
When the Civil War broke out, Ezekiel
Marion Brooks joined the ranks of many of our family and friends on
Ezekiel M. and Jane and their family

Children of Ezekiel Marion and Jane
Byrd Brooks:
Cynthia Eliza Brooks b. 1857 Furr TS, Stanly Co,
NC
Cynthia Eliza Brooks was probably named for her grandmother, Sinthia
Green Brooks (wife of Ezekiel Brooks and mother of Ezekiel Marion Brooks). She went by "Eliza" from all known
accounts. She married Hartwell Pinkney Love 19 Feb 1888 Stanly Co, NC (b. 25 Jan 1860 NC d. 18 Mar 1933
Stanly Co, NC). Eliza was Hartwell's
second wife. His first wife was Lundy J.
Furr (married
daughter of Israel & Mary Usley
Reed Furr (see below at Eliza's brother Daniel Marion
Brooks for Furr-Reed connections). Hartwell Love is buried at
Love's Grove Methodist Church Cemetery in Stanly Co, NC as is his first wife,
Lundy, having died
"Eliza Brooks, a daughter, was
blown over a large elm tree that stood in the front yard, carrying her in
mid-air and settled her down near Island Creek which is one-fourth mile
away." (from
Cyclone story)

found on the 1900 census there and his daughter Mary Jane married William
Edward Perry there in 1906.

She married Martin L. Love on 28 Aug 1888 Stanly Co, NC.
He was born c1869,
son of William and Eliza Teeter Love. They are buried with Ezekiel M. and Jane in

At the time of Jane Brooks' death, according to her obituary, Mary was
still single, yet
only about 23 years old. She may have
married afterward and moved back to NC with Dock F. Love. (BCBNOTE: this still doesn't sit
well with me because of the age difference and the distance from NC to TX…
might be a case of someone "needing" to fill in the blanks!)

There is a small possibility
that this child (listed in 1880 census) is not Mary Elizabeth. Apparently, they had not yet named the child
when the 1880 census was taken. Since Mary was born
February of 1879, it would seem that more than a year would have been enough
time to find an appropriate name for any child.
It may be that this was a tenth child that either did not live long or
was killed later in the cyclone. Mary's
whereabouts at this point are not known.
That's why I'm saying this is a small chance. J This is probably Mary. It may be that she was actually born in May
of 1880 instead of what the 1900 Collin Co, TX census reports.
Sad
tidings for Ezekiel Marion Brooks and family:
Cyclone (from Stanly Newspaper,
During the
lifetime of Ezekiel Brooks, a cyclone swept through the farm in a path about
one-half a mile wide. It destroyed almost
everything in its way including the home.
The house and trees were leveled to the ground. The home was lifted off its foundation,
leaving some furniture and bedding.
However, almost everything inside was strewn over timbers and anything
it happened to hang onto.
The family
was scattered to and fro, no one knowing where the others were for some
time. Eliza Brooks, a daughter, was
blown over a large elm tree that stood in the front yard, carrying her in
mid-air and settled her down near Island Creek which is one-fourth mile away.
Another
sister, Isabelle, was blown over across Island Creek, and lodged in an apple
tree on the farm of John O. Tucker.
After a while, the sisters got together and went back to the destroyed
home only slightly injured, but never to be forgotten, as a terrible episode.
One by one,
the family all got back together, only to find the floor and a few pieces of
furniture left of their home. The
Brooks’ mother was struck on the head by a flying piece of timber that caused
her death later. It might be of interest
to many people of this county to know that this Mrs. Ezekiel Brooks was the
mother of Mr. Wade Love of Stanfield.

From the
apparent ages of the children, this picture would had to have been taken
sometime around the time they left for Texas… about 1890 or so… maybe after
they arrived in Texas.
Ezekiel M. Brooks would, in January,
1892, sell the old Brooks homestead to Henry W. Hill before moving to McKinney, Collin Co, Texas. Some of the
family was found there in the 1900 census (Ezekiel, Jane, Henry and Mary). A newspaper article about the Brooks-Hill
Homestead is available on
this site in the "Stories" section.
