Hester Brooks Carelock of Anson Co., NC

Hester Brooks was born about 1789 to William Brooks I of Montgomery Co, NC.  Her brother James Brooks and Hester seemed to be associated with families of Cabarrus County, NC.   James' daughter, Hester Leah Brooks married Nathaniel Duncan Shinn of Cabarrus Co, NC.  The elder Hester Brooks married Samuel A. Carelock of Cabarrus Co, NC.   On 12 Mar 1818, Samuel Carelock and possible brother, Moses Carelock (may have m. Lydia, Hester’s sister and moved to Marshall Co, MS) are deeded land on the south side of Richardson's Creek in Anson Co, NC.  He moves there at that time and is found repeatedly on the Anson Co, NC census up to 1850 where he is found alone at the age of 58.  Hester died in 1849.  They probably met when he surveyed the land he wanted to buy, which was south of William Brooks' (who dies in only a couple of months from the date of Samuel's deed) homestead.  Jane, their first known child is born in 1817.  So, Samuel may have originally moved to be nearer to her father, especially in his feeble condition.

Margie Baucom, author of Brooks Bridge of History, believed that “Jane Hester Brooks” (or Hester Jane Brooks), daughter of William Brooks II was the wife of Samuel A. Carelock.  But, Ms. Baucom did not have the advantage of seeing the family estate papers (in private collection), of William Brooks II when he passed away in 1846.  Those papers clearly indicate that his daughter “Jane Carelock” was deceased by the time of his death.  We know that Hester Brooks passed away 3 May 1849 and was buried in the Barrett Cem. In White Store, NC.  It could be that This Hester Brooks’ middle or first name was “Jane” because her first daughter was named “Jane Eleanor” but that is barely evidence.  Also, every Anson Co, NC census record from 1820 till 1840 indicate that Samuel’s wife was older than him, b. <1793.  William Brooks II’s daughter Jane was born in 1807.

It seems that Samuel Carelock was a wealthy man.  After his wife, Hester Brooks Carelock died in White Store, Anson Co, NC on 3 May 1849, Samuel left for Smith Co, TX with his daughter Isabelle and her family.  It is reputed that he took four horseloads of gold and a number of slaves with him.  Samuel settled in Starrville, Texas.  The town was founded in 1853 and was first called "Gum Springs."  It had a population of 122 in 1895 and today, it's a ghost town.  The community had a post office 1857 to 1907.  The only remains are a church, city well, cotton gin, and cemetery… and, I suppose, a few tumbleweeds… J … ?   ghosts? L

From Tyler Events webpage:  Starrville, once an important overnight stop for stagecoaches and freight haulers, as well as a crucial manufacturing community. In l869, Starrville had the Texas Fair, said by some sources to have been the first state fair in Texas.
