Lee Yarbrough of Fayette County, IL

Thanks to Linda Clement for all this information on Lee Yarbrough!

Lee Yarbrough was born c1774 in Anson County, NC, and died Bet. 1837 - 1840 in Fayette Co, IL.  He married an unknown daughter of John Brooks II c1790.  She was born c1772 in Anson County, NC.  Lee Yarbrough was probably the son of Humphrey Yarbrough and Mary Lee, daughter of Robert Lee, Sr. of Anson Co, NC.

We know of Lee Yarbrough's marriage to John Brooks II's daughter because of a deed record of 13 Dec 1798:  Joshua Williams to Humphrey Yarbrough, Sr. , land on Richardson Creek. Land between Joshua and Lee Yarbrough which John Brooks left in his LW&T to Lee Y's wife. (unnamed) Anson Co, NC Deed Book G pg. 175.  This was also the same year that John Brooks III and Edmund Brooks sold off the land from their father's will.  John Brooks II died in Jan. 1792, according to a Petition.  His children scattered from the Anson Co, NC area.  John Brooks III went to KY then to Brown Co, OH and Edmond Brooks to Horry Co, SC while Lee Yarbrough and his wife went first to Hickman Co, TN, then Maury Co, TN and on to Fayette Co, IL to meet the rest of his family by 1824.  Rebecca Brooks marries to Drury Ledbetter and moves off to TN.

Maury County, TN tax list in 1811 shows Lee Yarbrough with only 1 poll.   In 1814, Lee Yarbrough as Assignee  of Joseph Hanna is granted by the state 12½ acres "lying Maury Co. on waters of Leapers Creek of Duck River, including Yarbrough's improvement."  The next year, on 2 Dec 1815, Lee Yarbrough of Maury Co. Tenn (warrants land on behalf of himself) to George Karaker, 5 acres S. side of Rocky Riv. below Caraker's Mill.  Anson Co, NCDB P&Q, p. 121.

     * Ambrose Yarbrough of Giles Co Tenn also sells land to George Karaker.

     * George Karaker was married to Frances Lee, daughter of Robert Lee, Jr.   This Robert Lee was the brother of Milly Lee who was married to Jonathan Yarborough and Mary Lee who was married to Humphrey Yarborough, Sr.  Lee Yarbrough is probably Humphrey's son and Ambrose Yarbrough is Lee's brother.

Finding Lee in 1820 Census of Hickman Co. TN indicates he might have followed the family to Illinois instead of accompanying the first exodus since Absalom Yarbrough, his son is found in Washington County, IL census for 1818.  The census indicates a total household of 11, which would imply that most of the family had moved there by 1818 and Lee was probably looking after some business in TN in 1820.  He is later found in IL by 1824.  But, according to a suit in Maury Co, TN, he's still there in 1822:  A suit followed Lee Yarbrough from North Carolina to the Chancery Court, Maury Co, TN in connection with a loan from Wm Crittendon, Sr. of Bedford Co. TN for which "Lee Yarborough had given the slave Peg as security."

VIVIAN YARBROUGH NOTE:  No land purchase has been found for Lee Yarbrough but his frequent suits first in Clinton Co., later in Fayette indicate the presumption he was a money lender, perhaps frequently backing taverns and hotels and lived in the hotels with his wife and children.

Lee Yarbrough is found, with his wife in the 1830 Fayette County, IL census records.  And although he doesn't appear in the 1835 State census for Illinois, he does show in a debt collection paper from the administrator of Col. John Taylor's estate on 7 Mar 1837.  This is the last we know of him.  He is said to have lived in Ramsey, IL.

Karen's note:  The 1837 entry was the last Vivian had found for Lee Yarbrough.  In the Illinois families, there are men named LeRoy, LaFayette and Leander, and Levy — and they all seem to have been called "Lee" in one record or another.  Of interest is that John and Polly (Ezell) Yarbrough named their first son Leander and he appears in many records as "Lee" Yarbrough.  "Lee" was carried on, primarily as a middle name, for generations in the Illinois Yarbrough line.  Vivian's father was Peter Lee Yarbrough.  I believe the Ambrose Lee Yarbrough who appears in the Greene Co., MO records is from this Illinois line, but so far I haven't connected him to anyone.
