Lucy Brooks Snuggs of Cullman Co, AL

Lucy Brooks was born 22 June 1823 in Mecklenburg Co, NC, the part of which became Union County, NC, a daughter of William and Mary Burleson Brooks. She married in Stanly Co, NC to a son of Richmond Gates Snuggs and Wincy Freeman Smith. His name was William Asbury Snuggs. The Snuggs were a Methodist family and were responsible for the first Methodist church in NC when they gave land for it to be built. Bishop Asbury himself is said to have come to America to oversee its construction and stayed with the Snuggs for a couple of weeks.

Lucy and William A. Snuggs married on Christmas Eve, 24 Dec 1855. Their first son, Thomas Asbury Snuggs was born the next year in NC. Thomas' brother, Richmond Elbert Snuggs was born two years later. By 1860, William and Lucy were living in Lee Co, GA in the Starkville PO area. Their two daughters were born there… Cora E. Snuggs and Willia H. Snuggs in 1861 and 1863 respectively. But, by 1870, they had moved again… this time to Paulding Co, GA near Dallas, GA. William Brooks III had moved to this area (next county over in Carroll Co, GA) around 1833 to begin building Methodist churches. He was a Methodist minister and had formed churches in Paulding, Haralson and Carroll Co's, GA. So, Lucy may have wanted to be near her brother and his family. Whatever the reason, William and Lucy Snuggs move to Cullman Co, AL sometime after 1880 and there they stayed. The Holly Pond Community of Cullman Co, AL became their home and they are found buried there with their two sons and their families in the Holly Pond Cemetery. Many thanks to Robert L. Lucy died first on 1 May 1904 in Cullman Co, AL. William followed 15 Apr 1907.

Thomas Asbury Snuggs

b.1856 probably in Stanly Co, NC He is found in Cullman Co, AL by records with the Bureau of Land Management when he received 159.55 acres of land there 10 Nov 1893. He dies in 1894.

Richmond Elbert Snuggs

b. 1858 probably in Stanly Co, NC. He married Mollie E. Kennedy 15 Aug 1886 in Carroll Co, GA. An "Elbert R. Snuggs" is found on Holly Pond Cemetery listing, having passed away in 1921.

Cora E. Snuggs

b. 1861 in Lee Co, GA. She is not in her parents household in 1880 Paulding Co, GA and so, is presumably married by this time.

Willia H. Snuggs

b. 1863 probably in Lee Co, GA.
