Newspaper Article (Stanly News and Press, Tuesday, Dec. 20, 1955)
concerning the death (1875) of King David Brooks by Pharoah

This relates to, Dora Alta Brooks, the daughter of
William H. Brooks, son of James Brooks (1785-1829) and Temperance Jane Tucker… Alta Brooks
accompanied her mother on a trip back to Stanly Co, NC in 1901 and kept this
diary of the trip.

This letter is written by "Rabbit John" Brooks, the youngest
child of James and Tempy Tucker Brooks to his older
brother William H. Brooks living in Pope Co, Arkansas.
This letter was written also by "Rabbit John" Brooks to his
niece Alta Brooks, daughter of William H. Brooks. This letter was written the year following
Alta's visit to NC in 1901 as told by Alta in her Diary
Other Letters:
of Mary Burleson Brooks to her parents, David and Ursula Burleson in
Rutherford Co, TN telling them of the death of William Brooks I.

Ezekiel Brooks was declared an "idiot" just after his father's
death in 1818 and his brother John was made his guardian. Then, he married Sinthia
or "Siddy" Green c1820. His brother John gave up guardianship. But, later his brother Alexander was made his
guardian and Ezekiel sued his wife (through his guardian) to declare his
marriage annulled due to his belief that Siddy was
having children that didn't belong to him.
There is so much information from court records on this entire story of
the lives of some of our early Brooks that it warrants its own page and special
attention.
These were taken from various family documents and courthouse
records. Many people from the 17th and
18th century did not know how to write.
Our family seemed to be well educated and most of William Brooks I's descendants were capable of writing. Those that used a mark, it is so indicated in
the documents and likewise, shown here.
